Billy 06:14
There's guns across the river about to pound you There's a lawman on your trail like to surround you Bounty hunters are dancing all around you Billy, they don't like you to be so free. Camping out all night on the veranda Walking in the streets down by the hacienda Up to Boot Hill the like to send you Billy, don't you turn your back on me. There's mills inside the minds of crazy faces Bullet holes and rifles in their cases There is always one more notch in four more aces Billy, and you're playing all alone. Playing around with some sweet signorita Into her dark chamber she will greet you In the shadows of the maizes she will lead you Billy, and you're going all alone. They say that Pat Garrett's got your number So sleep with one eye open, when you wander Every little sound just might be thunder Thunder from the barrel of his gun. There's always another stranger sneaking glances Some trigger-happy fool willing to take chances Some old whore from San Pedro'll make advances Advances on your spirit and your soul. The businessmen from Taos want you to go down So they've hired mister Garrett, he'll force you to slow down Billy, don't let it make you feel so low down To be hunted by the man who was your friend. So hang on to your woman, if you got one Remember in El Paso once you shot one I'll be in Santa Fe about one Billy, you've been running for so long. Gypsy queens will play your grand finale Way down in some Tularosa alley Maybe in La Rio Pecas valley Billy, you're so far away from home Billy, you're so far away from home

Without my walking stick, I'd go insane I can't look my best I feel undressed without my cane Must have my walking stick 'cause it may rain When it pours can't be outdoors without my cane If I ever left my house without my walking stick Well it would be something I could never explain Oh the thing that makes me click, on lovers lane Would go for naught if I were caught without my cane

All of Me 05:57
All of me Why not take all of me Can't you see I'm no good without you Take my lips I want to lose them Take my arms I'll never use them Your goodbye Left me with eyes that cry How can I go on dear without you You took the part That once was my heart So why not take all of me All of me Why not take all of me Can't you see I'm no good without you Take my lips I want to lose them Take my arms I'll never use them Your goodbye Left me with eyes that cry How can I go on dear without you You took the best So why not take the rest Baby, take all of me

I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter And make believe it came from you I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet They're gonna knock me off my feet Kisses on the bottom I'll be glad I've got 'em I'm gonna smile and say "I hope you're feelin' better" And sign "with love" the way you do I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter And make believe it came from you I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter And make believe it came from you I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet They're gonna knock me off my feet Kisses on the bottom I'll be glad I've got 'em I'm gonna smile and say "I hope you're feelin' better" And sign "with love" the way you do I'm gonna sit right down, write myself a letter And make believe it came from you And make believe it came from you

Summertime 05:28
Summertime and the livin' is easy Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high Your daddy's rich and your ma is good lookin' So hush, little baby, baby, don't you cry One of these mornin's, you're gonna rise up singin' Then you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky But 'til that mornin', there is nothin' can harm you With Daddy and Mammy standing by

I see trees of green Red roses too I see them bloom For me and you And I think to myself What a wonderful world I see skies of blue And clouds of white The bright blessed day The dark sacred night And I think to myself What a wonderful world The colors of the rainbow So pretty in the sky Are also on the faces Of people going by I see friends shaking hands Saying, "How do you do?" They're really saying "I love you" I hear babies cry I watch them grow They'll learn much more Than I'll never know And I think to myself What a wonderful world Yes, I think to myself What a wonderful world

about

When I met Pierre at a garden party, he was playing a Dylan song. We started playing together one and another big Bob song and modestly called ourselves les Petits Roberts. Pierre le Jeune, me le Vieux, guess why.

Now half a decade later, we start off this selection with
Billy, from Dylan’s 1973 Peckingpah soundtrack. Over time, we included older standards, Irving Berlin’s 1938
Walking stick being one example. Charlie Parker’s 1951
Au privave (rebaptised Après vous by Max Roach in his 1957 homage) became another les Petits Roberts’ staple.
Pocket brings back old memories: first heard that Sonny Boy Williamson II 1958 blues in Van Morrison’s adapted 1973 version (Jack Schroer’s sax!), and played it with erstwhile Golden Delicious back in 1979. From the same vault comes Tom Waits’ 1973
Ice cream man. Still miss the Rotten Renettes delicious backing vocals (oh, we were young then).

Don’t let me be misunderstood: les Petits Roberts has no grounds for complaint. Over the last five years we’ve been blessed with the percussion of Guillermo Hegel, Ariadna Nebot and Tom Meeus, the voice and patience of Catherine Korachais, the bass of Jeroen de Man, and an accordion player on the beach of Euboia. You might all have gone in different directions by now, but we owe you one.

Must have been on Marks & Simons’ 1931
All of me that Rollin Roland joined us on saxophone about a year ago, and he stayed.
Bato is gently floating homemade stuff: Pierre wrote it for his daughter, but you will like it too. Ever since I heard Joe Turner swing through Young & Ahlert’s 1935
Sit right down (on his 1976 The midnight special), I wanted to sing it one day. So here you have it, with Pierre providing a nice bossa rhythm. What follows lacked a title for forty years. I wrote it when a friend of mine died, at seventeen. Thus
17. Wished living was easier, as it seemingly is in Heyward & Gershwin’s 1934
Summertime. Porgy knows better. Hard as times may be, we end the album on a positive note, with Thiele & Weiss’ 1967
What a wonderful world.

Enough said. Let the music speak.
